The ICT Division of UN-ESCWA organized the second phase of a workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation Observatories (STI) in ESCWA Member Countries, in Beirut, during 18-20 January 2010.

 The previous and first phase of the workshop was entitled "Towards the Establishment of National and Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Observatories" and was held during 11-12 November 2009. Phase II of the workshop involved the participation of public sector specialists and technology experts who are involved in the creation and implementation of STI Observatories and the development of STI indicators. Therefore phase 2 of the workshop was Entitled "Capacity Building on STI Indicators and Observatories.” Dr. Ayman Al Haj Daoud represented PALAST at this workshop.

The workshop aimed at assessing the impact of STI on the socio-economic development of the ESCWA region; and on raising awareness on the role and purpose of STI observatories. It promoted the establishment of national STI observatories in member countries; and formulated plans for the establishment of a regional STI observatory; and finally it fostered regional cooperation among STI policymakers in the region.
